Worktops

What should I consider when choosing my worktops?
  • Durability & Maintenance: Materials like quartz and granite are hardwearing and easy to clean, while natural wood offers warmth and character but needs a little more care.
  • Style & Aesthetics: Your worktop should complement your cabinetry and overall design. You can keep it seamless or create contrast with bold colours and textures.
  • Functionality: Consider heat, stain, and scratch resistance. If you do a lot of cooking or entertaining, a more robust surface may be best.
  • Budget:  Costs vary depending on the material, finish, and thickness. There are options to suit both practical and luxury requirements.
  • Mixing Materials: Some clients choose different worktops for different zones (e.g. stone on prep areas, wood on an island) to combine beauty and function.
What are the differences between quartz, granite, marble, wood, and laminate?

Quartz:

  • Man-made using natural quartz crystals and resin. Extremely durable, non-porous, resistant to stains and scratches, and available in a wide range of colours and patterns. Low maintenance, making it a very popular choice.
  • Engineered for strength, non-porous, and resistant to scratches and stains. It doesn’t need sealing and simply wipes clean with mild soap and water, ideal for busy family kitchens.

Granite:

  • A natural stone, each slab is unique in colour and veining. Strong, heat-resistant, and luxurious, though it needs occasional sealing to prevent staining. Great if you want a natural, one-of-a-kind finish.
  • A natural stone that’s very hardwearing and heat resistant. It does require occasional sealing to protect against stains, but with care, it will last for decades

Marble:

  • Timeless and elegant with distinctive veining. Softer and more porous than granite or quartz, so it can stain or scratch more easily. Often chosen for its beauty, especially in feature areas like islands.
  • Marble is beautiful but softer and more porous, so it can scratch and stain more easily.

Wood:

  • Warm, tactile, and full of character. Ideal for adding natural charm to a kitchen. It does need regular oiling to protect the surface, and it’s more prone to scratches and water marks — but many people love the patina it develops over time.
  • Wood adds warmth and character, but it does require regular oiling and more upkeep

Laminate

  • A budget-friendly option, available in countless colours and finishes (including convincing imitations of wood or stone). Easy to maintain but less durable than natural stone or quartz, and not heat-resistant to the same level.
Can I mix different worktop materials in one kitchen (e.g. wood on the island, quartz on the counters)?

Absolutely,  in fact, mixing worktop materials can be a brilliant design choice. Many clients choose quartz or granite for the main work surfaces because they’re durable and easy to maintain, then add wood or marble on an island to bring warmth, contrast, or a touch of luxury.

This approach allows you to:

    • Define different zones:  For example, a hardwearing surface for cooking and prep, with a softer, warmer finish for dining or entertaining.
    • Create visual interest: Contrasting textures and tones can add depth and character to your kitchen.
    • Balance budget and style: Using premium materials in key areas while keeping others practical.

Our designers can guide you on which combinations will work best, making sure the overall look feels cohesive and beautifully balanced.

Do lighter colours stain more easily?
    • Quartz: Because it’s non-porous, quartz is highly stain resistant, whether you choose a light or dark colour.
    • Granite & Marble: Both are natural stones. Lighter shades can make stains more visible, but the key factor is sealing — properly sealed stone will resist staining well. Marble in particular is more porous, so it can be more prone to marks.
    • Wood: Lighter woods can show spills more easily, but with regular oiling and care, they remain protected.
    • Laminate: Very stain resistant, regardless of colour.

So while light colours may show marks more clearly, with the right material choice and care, they’re no harder to maintain than darker tones.

What’s the best worktop for a busy family kitchen?

For a busy family kitchen, the best worktops are those that are durable, low-maintenance, and easy to keep clean. Two of the most popular choices are:

    • Quartz:  Non-porous, stain-resistant, and scratch-resistant. It doesn’t need sealing and only requires a quick wipe down, making it ideal for everyday life.
    • Granite:Natural, tough, and heat-resistant. With occasional sealing, it will stand up to years of heavy use.

Other options:

    • Laminate:Budget-friendly and easy to clean, but less robust than stone.
    • Wood: Brings warmth and character but requires regular oiling and a little more care.
    • Marble: Beautiful and timeless, but softer and more prone to staining and scratches, so less practical for high-traffic kitchens.

Most families find quartz the best all-rounder because it combines practicality with style, while granite is perfect if you love the character of natural stone.

Colours & Finishes

How do I decide on the colours of my kitchen?
    • Your space – Lighter tones can make smaller kitchens feel brighter and more open, while darker shades add drama and depth to larger spaces.
    • Natural light – The amount of daylight your room gets can affect how colours look — we’ll always show you samples in your own space so you can see them in different lights.
    • Style & mood – Soft neutrals create a timeless, calming feel, while bold colours (like deep blues or greens) can make a striking statement. Many clients choose a mix — for example, a bold island against softer cabinetry.
    • Future-proofing – If you want your kitchen to feel timeless, neutrals and classic tones are a safe bet. If you’d like to follow trends, you can always bring colour in with accents, handles, or painted features that are easier to refresh.
    • Personal taste – Above all, your kitchen should reflect you. If there’s a colour you love, we’ll help you make it work in a balanced, thoughtful way.

We’ll guide you with mood boards, samples, and design visuals so you can feel confident about your choices and see how colours, worktops, handles, and accessories all come together.

Can I see colour samples in my own home to test them in different lights?

Yes, absolutely. We know colours can look very different in a showroom compared to your own home, so we’ll provide samples for you to take away. This allows you to see how they work with your lighting, flooring, and overall space at different times of day. It’s the best way to feel confident that the colours you choose will look just as you imagine once your kitchen is in place.

What are the current colour trends in kitchens?

In 2025, kitchen colour trends are all about warmth, nature-inspired tones, and personal expression. Here’s what’s trending:

    • Earthy Greens: Shades like olive, sage, and forest green bring a calming, nature-inspired feel to the kitchen.
    • Rich Blues: Deep blues, such as navy and slate, add sophistication and depth.
    • Warm Neutrals: Soft, warm whites and beige tones create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
    • Natural Wood Finishes: Oak and walnut cabinetry add texture and warmth, moving away from cool-toned woods.
    • Bold Accents: Incorporating bold colours like mustard yellow or deep red can add personality and contrast.

Would you like to explore how these colours can work in your space? We offer complimentary design consultations to help you choose the perfect palette for your kitchen.

Should I go for a neutral colour that will last, or something bold?

It depends on what matters most to you:

    • Neutral colours (soft whites, creams, greys, warm beiges) are timeless and versatile. They won’t date quickly and make it easy to change accessories, handles, or worktops if you want a fresh look later. Perfect if you want your kitchen to stay classic for many years.
    • Bold colours (deep blues, greens, or statement shades) make a strong design statement and add personality. They work really well on islands, feature cabinets, or smaller areas if you love colour but want to keep the main kitchen more subtle.

Many clients choose a mix of both — a neutral base with bold accents. This approach balances longevity with style, letting your kitchen feel modern and vibrant without overwhelming the space.

Can I combine two colours (e.g. darker island, lighter cabinetry)?

Yes. Combining colours is a great way to add depth and personality to your kitchen. A popular choice is a darker colour for the island paired with lighter cabinetry around the room. This creates:

    • Visual interest – the contrast draws the eye and makes your kitchen feel dynamic.
    • Zoning – it naturally defines different areas, like prep, cooking, and dining spaces.
    • Balance – using a neutral or lighter tone for most cabinets keeps the space feeling open and bright, while the darker island adds character and style.

Our designers can help you choose complementary shades and finishes to ensure your kitchen feels cohesive and harmonious.

Will painted finishes need to be touched up over time?

Hand-painted kitchens are beautiful and bring a lot of character, but like any painted surface, they may require occasional touch-ups over the years, especially in high-use areas like around sinks, handles, or worktops.

The good news: Our finishes are high-quality and durable, designed to last many years with minimal maintenance. When touch-ups are needed, they’re usually quick and easy, and we can advise the best products and techniques to keep your kitchen looking pristine.

Handles & Hardware

What are my options for handles and knobs?

You have a wide variety of handles and knobs to choose from, allowing you to personalise the style of your kitchen:

    • Metal handles & knobs – Available in finishes like brushed nickel, brass, matte black, or polished chrome. These add a modern or classic touch depending on the style.
    • Wooden handles – Handmade in-house to perfectly match your cabinetry, giving a warm, natural feel.
    • Integrated or handleless designs – Sleek and contemporary, with recessed grips or push-to-open mechanisms for a minimalist look.
    • Custom options – If you have a unique design in mind, we can often source or create bespoke pieces to suit your kitchen perfectly.

Choosing the right handles can subtly transform the look of your kitchen, so we guide you with samples and advice to find the perfect fit for your style and workflow.

Do you offer handleless or push-to-open designs?

Yes! We offer handleless kitchens with either recessed grips or push-to-open mechanisms, giving a sleek, modern, and minimalist look. These designs create clean lines and a contemporary feel, while still being practical and easy to use.

We’ll guide you through the options so you can choose the style that suits both your kitchen’s look and your daily workflow.

Can handles be customised (size, shape, finish)?

Yes! Although we work within manufacturers’ standard sizes, there is a wide choice of handle sizes available, allowing you to select the perfect fit for each cabinet.

You can also choose from a variety of shapes and finishes, from classic knobs to sleek modern bars, and from polished metals to bespoke colours. This ensures your handles complement both your cabinetry and overall kitchen design.

Which handle style works best for a modern / traditional kitchen?

Modern kitchens: Sleek, minimalist handles or handleless push-to-open designs work best. Think clean lines, bar handles in matte black, stainless steel, or brushed nickel — the simpler, the better. Integrated handles or recessed grips also enhance a contemporary, uncluttered look.

Traditional kitchens: Classic knobs, cup handles, or ornate bar handles suit more traditional cabinetry. Brass, bronze, or aged finishes add warmth and character, complementing shaker-style or hand-painted cabinetry beautifully.

Can I mix different handle styles in one kitchen (e.g. drawers vs cupboards)?

Yes. Many clients mix and match — for example, a modern bar handle on a shaker island can add a subtle contemporary twist while keeping the overall look timeless.

What finishes are available — brass, chrome, matte black, antique, etc.?

We offer a wide range of finishes to suit any style of kitchen, including:

    • Brass – warm, classic, or contemporary polished look.
    • Chrome – sleek and modern with a reflective shine.
    • Matte Black – bold, contemporary, and minimal.
    • Antique or Aged Finishes – add character and a traditional touch.
    • Nickel or Satin Steel – subtle and versatile, works with many styles.
    • Special Finishes – for bespoke options to perfectly complement your cabinetry.

These finishes can be mixed and matched across drawers, cabinets, and islands to create a unique, cohesive look tailored to your kitchen.

Lighting & Mood (closely linked to colours)

How does lighting affect the colour choice for my kitchen?

Lighting has a big impact on how colours appear in your kitchen. Natural daylight, warm artificial lights, or cool LED lighting can all change the way a colour looks:

    • Natural light: Brighter colours appear more vibrant, while dark colours may look richer or deeper.
    • Warm lighting (yellow tones): Makes whites and neutrals feel cozier, but can slightly alter cool colours.
    • Cool lighting (white/blue tones): Enhances crisp whites and blues but can make warm colours feel harsher.
Can you build in under-cabinet or feature lighting to highlight worktops?

Yes! We can incorporate under-cabinet lighting or feature lighting to enhance your worktops and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. This type of lighting:

    • Highlights textures and finishes of your worktops and cabinetry.
    • Improves task lighting for cooking and prep areas.
    • Adds ambiance to your kitchen, perfect for evenings or entertaining.

We work with you to choose the right style, placement, and intensity so your lighting complements your kitchen design beautifully.

Should I consider natural light when choosing colours?

Absolutely! Natural light dramatically affects how colours appear in your kitchen. A colour that looks soft and warm in a showroom may appear very different in your space depending on the amount and direction of sunlight:

    • South-facing kitchens get lots of sunlight, which can make colours appear brighter and more vibrant.
    • North-facing kitchens receive cooler, indirect light, which can make warm colours feel muted or darker.
    • Windows and skylights also change the balance of light throughout the day, so testing colours in your kitchen at different times is essential.

We recommend testing colour samples in your home to see how they look in both natural and artificial light before making a final decision.

Cabinet Construction & Quality

Are your cabinets fully bespoke or partly pre-made?

All of our cabinetry is fully bespoke and made to order in-house. This means every cabinet is tailored to your kitchen’s layout, style, and dimensions, giving you complete flexibility with design, finishes, and storage solutions.

While we can source certain specialist items like metalwork or stone worktops from trusted local fabricators, your cabinets are crafted specifically for your space, ensuring a perfect fit and a truly unique kitchen.

Do you build cabinets with solid wood, MDF, or a combination?

We use a combination of high-quality materials to ensure both beauty and durability:

    • Solid wood – typically used for  our frames and door styles, and visible components for a premium, natural look.
    • MDF – used for the centre panel on a shaker door or for more modern slab doors. Our carcasses are made from Oak or walnut veneered MDF or Plywood and can be stained in a colour of your choice. iMDG might be used if the carcasses are to be paintedScribing panels and end panels will be MDF for stability and where smooth finishes are important.

This approach combines the warmth and character of solid wood with the strength, consistency, and practicality of MDF, giving you a kitchen that’s both stunning and long-lasting.

What thickness do you use for cabinet doors and carcasses?

Our cabinets are built to robust, high-quality standards:

    • Cabinet doors – typically 22mm thick, giving strength, durability, and a premium feel.
    • Carcasses (cabinet boxes) – also 19mm thick, ensuring stability and longevity.
How durable are bespoke cabinets compared to off-the-shelf ones?

Bespoke cabinets are generally far more durable than off-the-shelf options because:

    • They’re made to order using high-quality materials like solid wood and premium MDF.
    • Every joint, hinge, and drawer is carefully crafted and fitted for your specific kitchen layout.
    • They’re designed to last, with attention to details that mass-produced cabinets often compromise on.

While off-the-shelf cabinets may be quicker to install and cheaper initially, bespoke cabinetry offers long-term strength, functionality, and a kitchen that truly fits your space and style.

Are your cabinets hand-painted, spray-painted, or lacquered?

We offer both hand-painted and spray-painted finishes to suit your kitchen style and preference:

    • Hand-painted – gives a beautifully tactile, artisanal finish with character and depth.
    • Spray-painted – provides a smooth, flawless surface for a modern, consistent look.

Both finishes are high-quality and durable, and we’ll guide you on the best choice for your cabinetry, colour, and lifestyle.

We create bespoke kitchens that fit beams, alcoves, and sloping ceilings, maximising space and style while maintaining full functionality.

Do you advise on open-plan vs closed kitchen layouts?

We help you decide between open-plan and closed layouts, creating a kitchen that’s functional, stylish, and perfectly suited to your home.

What’s the best way to plan for workflow (cooking, prepping, entertaining)?

We design kitchens with efficient workflow in mind, ensuring every area is practical and easy to use:

    • Cooking zones near the hob and oven for convenience.
    • Prep areas with ample worktop space and easy access to sinks and appliances.
    • Entertaining spaces that allow guests to mingle while you work.
    • Logical storage placement to keep utensils, cookware, and ingredients within reach.

Our goal is to create a kitchen where everything flows naturally, making cooking and entertaining effortless and enjoyable.

Style & Aesthetic Choices

How do I choose between modern, traditional, or shaker styles?

We help you find the style that suits your home and lifestyle:

    • Modern kitchens – sleek, minimal, and contemporary with clean lines.
    • Traditional kitchens – classic, elegant, and timeless, often with detailed cabinetry.
    • Shaker kitchens – simple, versatile, and charming, bridging classic and contemporary.

Our designers can show examples, mood boards, and finishes to help you visualise each style and choose the one that feels right for you.

Can I mix styles — for example, a modern island with classic cabinetry?

Yes. Mixing styles can create a unique and personalised kitchen:

    • Combine modern islands with classic or shaker cabinetry for contrast and interest.
    • Blend materials, finishes, and colours to unify different elements.
    • Our designers ensure the result is cohesive, balanced, and functional.

This approach lets you capture the best of both worlds while reflecting your personal taste.

What design elements will make my kitchen timeless vs trendy?

Creating a timeless kitchen focuses on classic choices that endure:

    • Neutral colours like whites, greys, and natural wood tones.
    • Simple, clean cabinetry styles such as shaker or slab doors.
    • Quality materials for worktops, handles, and finishes.
    • Subtle, functional layouts that prioritise usability.

Trendy elements can add personality but may date quickly: bold colours, unusual shapes, or statement finishes.

We help you balance classic foundations with touches of trend so your kitchen feels fresh now and remains stylish for years.

Can you design my kitchen to match the character of my home (e.g. period features)?

Yes! We specialise in bespoke kitchens that complement your home’s architecture and style:

    • Replicate period features, mouldings, and detailing for historic or traditional homes.
    • Choose finishes, colours, and cabinetry styles that reflect your home’s character.
    • Ensure the kitchen blends seamlessly while remaining fully functional.

Our goal is a kitchen that is both beautiful and in harmony with your home’s unique charm.

Do you offer design advice on lighting, flooring, and wall colours to complement the kitchen?

Yes! Our designers provide guidance on all elements that impact your kitchen’s look and feel:

    • Lighting to enhance work areas and create atmosphere.
    • Flooring that’s practical, durable, and visually cohesive.
    • Wall colours that harmonise with cabinetry, worktops, and finishes.

We aim to create a kitchen that is beautiful, functional, and perfectly coordinated from floor to ceiling.

Functionality & Practicality

How do I balance style with functionality?

A great kitchen looks stunning and works seamlessly:

    • Smart layouts for cooking, prepping, and entertaining.
    • Practical storage solutions like pull-outs, larders, and drawers.
    • Durable materials that are easy to clean and maintain.
    • Design details that reflect your personal style without compromising usability.

We help you create a kitchen that is beautiful, practical, and tailored to your lifestyle.

What design features help make a kitchen easier to use day-to-day?

We focus on features that save time, reduce clutter, and improve flow:

    • Smart storage: pull-out larders, corner carousels, and drawer dividers.
    • Ergonomic layouts: zones for cooking, prepping, and cleaning.
    • Soft-close hinges and drawers for smooth, quiet operation.
    • Integrated appliances and hidden charging solutions for convenience.
    • Ample worktop space where you need it most.

These elements ensure your kitchen is efficient, practical, and enjoyable to use every day.

Can you design with accessibility in mind (e.g. for children, older relatives, wheelchair users)?

Yes. We create kitchens that are safe, functional, and inclusive:

    • Adjustable worktop heights for comfort and ease of use.
    • Easy-to-reach storage and pull-down shelving.
    • Wide, clear walkways for mobility or wheelchair access.
    • Child-friendly safety features where needed.

Our goal is a kitchen that works for everyone in your household, combining accessibility with style.
